Specifically, it divides the distance in miles by the vehicle's fuel efficiency (MPG) to determine fuel consumption in gallons, then converts this to litres using the conversion factor 4.546 litres per gallon. The resulting volume is multiplied by the price per litre to produce the total cost. Running the calculator twice with the same distance and fuel price but different MPG values produces a direct cost comparison between vehicles.
